5 Ways to Accommodate Your Neurodivergent Life Without a Diagnosis

Updated: Jul 2, 2023

If you don’t have any diagnoses for your neurotype, but you need to start making accommodations to your lifestyle, here are 5 ways you can do so.

Start by talking with your friends and family about how they can accommodate you.

  1. Let them know what your triggers are, and how they can help you avoid them.

  2. Talk about the challenges you face, and problem-solve together.

  3. Let them know when you might need breaks or time alone.

Make your home neurodivergent-friendly.

  1. Your home is your own. It doesn’t have to look like a picture-perfect magazine.

  2. Use open shelving systems.

  3. Have whiteboards to write notes or reminders for yourself.

  4. A dirty home is not a representation of your value as a human. If you have trouble cleaning, that’s okay. Establish a system that works for your health and doesn’t leave you feeling burnt out.

  5. Create quiet places in your home to unwind and unmask.

Use fidgets, sensory tools, and mobility aids as you need them.

  1. You don’t need any diagnosis to buy these things online. If you need them- use them.

  2. Take a look at my Amazon Sensory Tool List which has all of the fidgets, sensory tools, and aids that I love and use.

Read books about neurodiversity and your neurotypes to help you accommodate your life more specifically.

  1. Take a look at my Amazon Reading List for recommended books on neurodiversity, autism, OCD, and more.

If you need something- ask for it.

  1. Making accommodations in your daily life can be difficult, but you don’t necessarily need a diagnosis for most of them. If you need something, just ask for it. This includes at home, school, and at work.

  2. Talk to your therapist or doctor for letters of support if you need accommodations at work or school. Many accommodations only need a simple diagnosis of anxiety or depression to be given. If you’re not sure, just ask.

  3. Here’s a great resource for Requesting Reasonable Accommodations at Work.

This is definitely not an exhaustive list of ways you can accommodate your neurodivergent life. Accommodations are individual, and not all accommodations are going to work for you. It may take a process of trying different things, seeing if they work for you, and then trying something else. Making your home, partnerships, and lifestyle accommodating to your neurotype is important for having a happy and fulfilling life as a neurodivergent person living in a neurodiverse world.
